From the Independent, Oskaloosa, Kansas, August 30, 1862
A drove of twenty two Buffaloes, varying in age from five
months to two years, passed through town yesterday (Friday) morning, on the way
to the Ohio and New York State Fairs. Most of our citizens had never seen a
herd of these animals before, and quite a crowd assembled on the Public Square
to give them an inspection. They are not the handsomest looking quadrupeds in
the world. They were caught when young on the headwaters of the Arkansas, and
tamed.
This story appeared in “Yesteryears” in April 1990.
